Since 2015, Rehoboth Community & Family Services has been integral in supporting healthy families and building sustainable communities as marginalized men and women - of all races, genders, and ages - reintegrate. We proudly support their opportunity for a second chance as returning citizens by building a bridge to critical support services.
Seeking to help people in need was always embedded in my spirit; I decided to become a lawyer at 12. Growing up in Brooklyn, New York, during the turmoil of the Civil Rights Movement, affirmative action and school bussing ignited an interest in social justice. I would never imagine that my engagement with the criminal justice system would become deeply personal later in life - my family experienced the challenges of incarceration, addiction, and behavioral health issues.
In 2007, my husband, Christopher, and I made two significant decisions that changed the trajectory of our lives. We launched a solid waste and recycling disposal service, C&C Tire Carrier and Disposal Service. We also incorporated our social justice organization, Rehoboth Famly & Community Services, as a resource bridge for justice-impacted individuals, families, and communities. The name, Rehoboth, has a special meaning: It is the name of a well.
Genesis 26:22 NLT. Abandoning that one, Isaac moved on and dug another well. This time there was no dispute over it, so Isaac named the place Rehoboth (which means “open space”), for he said, “At last the Lord has created enough space for us to prosper in this land.
Wells are a source of sustainability and life. We draw from this wisdom and are mindful of God's call found in Matthew 25:36, which states, "I was naked, and you gave me clothing. I was sick, and you cared for me. I was in prison, and you visited me." We are confident that as we serve those who have been economically and socially marginalized, we are breaking the barriers to reintegration and honoring God.
It is our ministry to compel returning citizens to come to a place of understanding, forgiveness, responsibility, and restoration. Over the years, Rehoboth staff and volunteers have visited state and federal inmates, written letters, distributed food and clothing, covered motel bills, and more. We've answered frantic calls from parents and attended court hearings and trials. We guided families experiencing tremendous grief due to the loss of their loved ones while incarcerated, who they were fighting to bring home. We have untold success stories of returning citizens, too. Many were able to access life-changing support and services through our valued Rehoboth community partners. We exist to help people help themselves.
